Total Gyms and health clubs spend millions of dollars every year to entice members with colorful equipment that only requires fixed resistance points: push, pull or lift. In the real world, you have to balance, stand, reach, bend, etc. Freeweights, combined with proper posture and stance, enable the body to move in several directions, using several muscle groups together. The primary muscle group is receives the most attention while the secondary groups keep the body balanced, ultimately requiring more energy to activate them all at once. The energy sources used are fat and sugars to power all of the muscles performing the movements. In short: you'll get a more efficient workout, reshape your body faster, and less time needed to do it all.

One of metaMorphixx's newest members, Pablo Suarez, notes his experience thus far with freeweights supports some of the research he completed prior to joining. A clip from an online fitness review on MSN states:

"The health-club culture tries to create a dependency on machines," says Vern Gambetta, a trainer with 38 years of experience training professional and recreational athletes, and the author of Athletic Development: The Art & Science of Functional Sports Conditioning. "If you have a limited amount of time to work out, you're better off ditching the machine to do different kinds of body-weight and whole-body exercises. You'll get more caloric burn for your time spent." Critics also charge that a traditional machine-centric regimen has other downsides. In general, it relies excessively on the discipline of the exerciser, it promotes training muscles in isolation (as opposed to how muscles really work, in a chain of movement), and it can stress vulnerable joints more than is necessary. At issue is not only the very meat and potatoes of how you work out, but also the best way to get the most out of your time in the gym."
